It occurs to me that on both occasions when I lost a lot of weight, I'd
been suffering symptoms suggestive of rheumatoid arthritis, which went away.

I've suspected three interesting explanations, among others: (1) my fat
had been producing pro-inflammatory chemicals, (2) the loss of weight
reduced the stress on my joints, and (3) by catabolizing tissues in my
body (especially proteins?), I gave it a chance to remove lesions from
my joints.

(Also, on both occasions, I got more sleep and rest than before, and
became more physically active, too.)

There is no "heart disease puzzle" - the evidence is now cle For example: QUOTE: ...We stumbled onto a non enzymatic process that transforms endoperoxides into toxic oxidized lipids, levuglandins, that stick to proteins and DNA," Salomon said.
